What you should know about criterion hotel
A man by the name of William Gillespie commissioned the building to be built in 1877 and the hotel was designed by famous Oamaru architects Forrester and Lemon Architects who also designed many other buildings in Oamaru at the time. The building started it’s long decline and in the 1930’s the building was deemed unfit as a boarding house. The Criterion gained the Historic Places Trust registration in 1987 and with renewed interest and enthusiasim the Oamaru Whitestone Civic Trust later received the building and refurbished the interior as well as restoring the exterior walls to their signature whiteness of Oamaru Stone. In 2012, Sally Ann Donnelly acquired the building and has given the Criterion a chance to reach its full potential.

Like all the others this room has vast views of the precinct and offers a warm, cozy nights sleep as well as a refreshing shower and breakfast in the morning. Continental breakfast facilities are on offer here with plenty of seating and a TV to keep everyone happy! There is a mix of the impaired and the fresh with as much of the creative bronze fittings kept as plausible but with a scanty fresh comforts we have today. A vast room to base yourself from with the shared bathroom and breakfast ready to cater to everything you need to start cor day. Of course that’s honest a wee hint of what we have, we also have a range of desserts you have to try. A vast space upstairs is the breakfast room which is bathed in light and enjoys great heritage views from its second deposit vantage point. Whether it be soaking up the atmosphere in the bar, enjoying the company of others in one of our function rooms, or staying a evening in the restored hotel accommodation the Criterion can cater to everyone!.
